4 Reasons To Learn Ukulele During The Pandemic

image ukulele stay homeAs the world battles on against a global pandemic and society adjusts to a ‘new normal’, health and well being is the topic at the forefront of everyone’s mind.

With more free time than we know what to do with, many Instagram feeds are plastered with freshly baked banana bread and at at-home yoga sessions; the lack of external noise has really given us the opportunity to focus on ourselves and what we love & has helped us discover meaningful ways to fill our time.

Perhaps your guitar is collecting dust from your punk rock days? Or your cello stands alone in the loft? Here are some reasons below why playing a musical instrument is the best way to nourish your soul during lockdown;

1- Keeps the mind sharp

Much like your daily dose of Sudoku, playing a musical instrument from youth has long been proven as a way of protecting the mind as it ages. It’s been recognised as highly beneficial in defending against the likes of Alzheimer’s and Dementia, diseases attributed with ageing. Moreover, cognitive tests show those skilled at reading or playing music have a higher IQ than those who don’t – how’s that for playground chat (!)

2- Reducing stress levels

This one goes without saying. How many of us have shaken off a bad day at work by blasting a terrible soundtrack full blast? Now imagine you’re the one MAKING that music – studies have found playing an instrument significantly reduces stress & anxiety levels as we have the opportunity to focus our minds on something else, subsequently lowering blood pressure and other vascular problems.

3- Improves immune functions

There have since been studies proving those who play a musical instrument have stronger immune systems and are better able to stave off colds and flues. Given the current situation I can’t think of a more entertaining way to ward off a virus!

4- Keep the Kids entertained!

Being a parent is tough most of the time. The lockdown has also made children needed to be entertained for longer. A productive way to counter boredom in this period, is by gifting a Ukulele to your child. Examples beginner Uke’s include our Mahalo’s and Octopus range.

Further, Youtube channels for beginners “How To Strum the Ukulele // Beginner Uke Tutorial”, “How to Practice Chord Changes // Beginner Ukulele Tutorial” are an awesome way to get up and running. It has never been easier to learn an instrument and keep the kids (and adults!) entertained at home.

But don’t just take our word for it – pick up a Ukelele from Uke Universe and go make sweet music. Your mind and body will thank you for it.
