The collection is an encyclopedia of the Ozarks’ music history, and it provides students with the best of both worlds: a fun way to learn about mid-century Ozarks lifestyles and a fun way to discover the best of Ozarks’ musical legacy. The collection consists of materials from the Ozarks, Arkansas and Missouri. It is one of the largest collections of traditional music in the United States.
The best part is that the collection is a living, breathing archive, and the music and lyrics are available to download.
Instrumental instruments of the Ozarks(Ozark Banjourine)
Among the musical instruments of the Ozarks are the banjo, fiddle, guitar, mountain dulcimer, and autoharp. The banjo is an instrument that originated in West Africa, and the fiddle is a similar instrument. The mountain dulcimer is a unique American-made instrument. It is a hybrid instrument, and it has similarities to the violin.
The earliest settlers of the Ozarks likely carried fiddles. Old black and white photos tell the story of the creation of the mountain dulcimer. The instrument was shaped by hand, using tools. The instrument is made of wood and has four strings, which are turned on a string turner. These turners were made from bone or rosewood, and operated on friction. The instrument was made without a blueprint.
Old dulcimers were made from available trees. The wood used was often plane wood or a thin slab from a local mill. However, the settlers still needed to plane the wood to the desired dimensions. Some of the older instruments were varnished, while others were given linseed oil. The historic dulcimers had to look beautiful. The old dulcimers also had to be strong.
